Shot Types
Both CBBC's SMart and Diseny Channels Art Attack both mainly include three shot types. These are an establishing shot, close ups of the presenters hands whilst demonstrating an activity and finally mid shots of the presenter.
Establishing shots - The establishing shots are used in two different ways. The first being the opening shot, often using a crane, allowing the audience to see the enitre set which gives them a clear sence of what the show will entail. The second way in which the establishing shot is used is after a VT, as this draws the audince back to the studio.

Mid Shots - The mid shot is also used in two different ways during the shows. We first see this shot type at the beginning of the show when the audience is introduced to the presenters and the content of the show. This helps to build a raport with the presenter making the audience feel confortable. The second way mid shots are used within both programmes are during the art demonstrations. This is not only done to reffer back to the presenter giving instructions on how to make the craft activitie but also to express there enthusiasum towards what they are making which essentially reflects on to the audience
.
Close Ups - Close upshot is only of the presenters hands allowing the viewer to see exactly how they are making the product in a 's - The close up shots within both programmes are only used while a craft activity is being demonstrated. The shot is only of the presenters hands allowing the viewer to see exactly how they are making the product in a clear, precise way.

As these shots are the conventional shots used within a childrens art programme I will also be using them within my own Art show, as it will help the audience to clearly recognise the genre of the show.
Set And Lighting
CBBC's SMart

From my research into the set of CBBC's SMart, I have discovered that there are two main areas of set. The first is the workshop area in which all the crafts and are projects are demonstrated. This area contains a large desk where all the materials and equiptment for the particular craft are layed out ready to use. As well as this the background of this area is very colourful with bright purple light drawing the views attention to the screen.
The second area to the SMart set is a large wide open space which is filled with arts supplies such as paint pots and drawing materials. This particular part of the set is used to open and close the show as it portrays clearly to the audience what the show is going to contain. As well as this using this wide open space, along with a bright white lighting scheme, creates a sence of calm and overall gives the audience as sence of welcome to the show.
Disny Channel's Art Attack

CITV's Art Attack took a diferent approach to their set when compared with CBBC's SMart. The first difference that I noticed was the vibrancy of the set, as Art Attack appeared to have far brighter lighting and used bold primary colours through out the set in the form of giant pencials and paint pots. This also suggested to me that Art Attack was aimed at a younger target audience than SMart.
However, there are many similarities between the two sets. For example like SMart, Art Attack also uses two main areas of set (one for the craft demonstrations and the other for introducing and closing the show). The craft area of the two shows are similar, however, Art Attacks work space appears to be smaller although the desk is far more clourful allowing which draws the audience's attention far quicker. The second part of the set on the other hand is very similar as they are both wide open spaces filled with art materials and equiptment, only they are giant replicers in the Art Attack set.
My Set

From using this research I have been able to design my own set in a knowledgeable and informed mannor. It was clear to see that my set need to be bright and colourful and convey to the audience immeadiatly to the audience the genre of the show. Therefore, i have decided to draw inspiration for CITV's Art Attack and create a set using giant pencils and paint brushes. I have also chosen to follow the convention of having to main set areas. the first being the craft work space and the second being an area to introduce and close the show. However, as my studio space is not as large as SMart or Art Attack I will be doing this on a smaller scale, with fewer objects in the background.
Animations and Characters
Both Art Attack and SMart use comedic characters within their programmes as a form of filler between each craft activity. However they are used in different ways within each show.
CBBC's SMart
SMart use the clay animation 'Morph' as a filler in their programme. Each episode Morph finds himself in a amusing situation that the audience can relate too.
Disney Channels
Art Attack uses its puppet character 'The Head' as a way of re-telling the audience how to complete an 'Art Attack', however it then adds a sence of light comedie for the audience by having quirlky characteristics and coming across as not being very good at art. However, I don't feel that the audience need to be re told how to complete the 'art attack' as the instructions already given are very clear and easy for the target audience to understand.
Running times and schedules
From looking at my two similar projects i have been able to see that the running time for CBBC's SMart was originally 25 mins but was then changed and now has the running time of an hour. My research shows me however, that a show this long based around one subject would not be able to hold my target audience's attention, therefore the longest time that my show will possibly run for is 30 minutes.
My other similar project that i've researched is CITV's Art Attack which has the running time of 19 minutes. This running time is far better suited to my target audience as it will hold their attention from start till finish. From discovering the running times of these two programmes and placing it alongside my research on childrens attention spans I have been able to make an educated decision on the running time of my own show (20 minutes).
